Craft activity in Michoacán stands out for its diversity and the abundance of products made, as well as for the large number of people dedicated to this work. This richness motivates the implementation of official policies and actions that support the promotion and development of local crafts. Michoacán has 16 branches of handicraft production, each subdivided into different types of products, ranging from utilitarian and decorative to ceremonial. The variety and quantity of products depend on the specific branch in question.

Michoacán is a region of vast cultural and anthropological richness that preserves the traditions and skills of five ethnic groups:

  • Mazahuas
  • Nahuas
  • Otomi
  • Purépechas
  • Matlatzincas or Pirindas
