Michoacán’s varied landscapes become an ideal refuge for diverse migratory species.
During the winter months, Petatán Island is transformed into a true natural spectacle with the arrival of thousands of pelicans that travel from Canada in search of warmer climates.
Annually, about 20,000 pelicans arrive in this area, and curiously, the oldest specimens are the first to arrive and settle in the colonies.

The relationship between the pelicans and the local fishermen is special.
Each evening, the fishermen feed the birds, creating a perfect time to observe them up close as they gather in search of food.
The season begins in mid-October and ends in March, when the pelicans begin their return to Canada.
Petatán Island, located less than two hours from Zamora, is the ideal place to witness this impressive migration.
It is advisable to pay attention to official notices, as dates may vary slightly depending on weather conditions.

Pelicans, known as “borregones” because of the whiteness and fluffiness of their plumage, which from a distance resembles a flock of sheep, usually fly in groups of up to 3,500 individuals. During their migration, they make daily flights of up to 500 kilometers at altitudes above 3,000 meters, which allows them to move between their feeding and resting areas.

Did you know that…?

  • Pelicans can reach a wingspan of up to 2.7 meters, making them one of the most imposing bird species.
  • Each Boreal Pelican consumes up to 1.8 kilograms of fish per day, which is vital to sustain its energy during long migratory flights.
  • Its gular bag, the characteristic expandable bag under the bill, can hold up to 11 liters of water and fish, an essential adaptation for your efficient fishing method.
  • Despite their large size, Pelicans are expert fliers. They often fly in “V” formations, which allows them to save energy by reducing air resistance, a strategy they use during their long-distance migrations.

Every visit to Petatán Island during the Pelican Borealis season is an opportunity to marvel at the grandeur of nature and the extraordinary migration of these majestic birds.
