The Dance of the Tlahualiles, whose origin dates back to the Nahuatl culture, derives its name from the word “Tlahualil,” which means “the warrior who clothes himself.”
This dance represents the figure of Santiago Apostle in his eternal struggle of good against evil.
Every July 25, in the community of Sahuayo, this tradition comes to life with an impressive display of color, devotion and pride.
The Tlahualiles, dressed in imposing costumes and colorful masks, symbolize warriors preparing for battle.
The festivity not only honors Santiago Apostle, but is also a celebration of the identity and cultural legacy of the region.
In this event, the dance becomes a ritual full of energy and passion, where religious syncretism is expressed through a vibrant tradition that endures in the heart of the community.
