Although the term encompasses a variety of stringed instruments made from different types of wood, in this case we refer to those made in small workshops in the Paracho region, including the communities of Ahuiran, Aranza and Nurio. These instruments, such as guitars, violins, violas, cellos, double basses and guitarrones, are recognized for their high quality and cultural and artistic value. The harp of La Huacana, Coalcomán and the Coast, which share these same characteristics, also stands out.
The vocation of the inhabitants of Paracho, Michoacán in the construction of stringed instruments, especially the guitar, is a peculiar case due to the number of artisans who make them and the quality that is recognized nationally and internationally.
In Paracho, Michoacán, there are three types of guitars, each with its own characteristics according to the techniques used in the manufacturing process:
- The popular guitar
- The studio guitar
- The concert guitar
The most widely produced guitar is the popular guitar, whose high quality has gained recognition both in Mexico and abroad, attracting important musicians.
The concert guitar, the highest quality guitar, is made by specialized craftsmen and is occasionally made to order, following the buyer’s specifications.
The sound of this guitar depends on the species and quality of the woods used.
Currently, a wide variety of woods are used, such as pinabete, palo escrito, rosewood, pine, cirimo, mahogany, white cedar, tepamo, walnut, granadillo and galeana.
