The Iglesia Hundida del Carmen, in Tlalpujahua, is a poignant vestige of a past marked by tragedy and tenacity.
Built in a setting of breathtaking natural beauty, this church was a spiritual pillar for the local community.
However, in 1937, the peace of this town was tragically interrupted when an avalanche of mud from the toxic wastewater of the Dos Estrellas mine buried much of the town.

From the ruins emerge the church tower and an angel that, with its serene beauty, stands like a guardian over the remains of the buried village.
This angel, standing amidst the rubble, symbolizes both loss and hope, reminding visitors of the community’s ability to resist and move forward.
